FAQs

Changing your access to BNF content from bnf.org to MedicinesComplete: Frequently Asked Questions

Q:

Why is the http://www.bnf.org service moving to MedicinesComplete?

A:

When you logged in via bnf.org you were taken to MedicinesComplete to view the content; both are platforms provided by Pharmaceutical Press. Changing your access is the first step in a programme of digital developments that will improve functionality and allow the BNF to deliver better services.

Q:

I have tried to register, but the system says my IP address or email has not been recognised.

A:

This may be because you are trying to sign in to MedicinesComplete using your previous www.bnf.org details. When you get to the page that says ‘Register’ or ‘Sign in’ you need to ‘Register’ to MedicinesComplete – your old bnf.org login details will no longer work.

Q:

I access BNF via the NHS N3 Gateway, and so don’t have to log in. Do I still need to register on MedicinesComplete?

A:

No, you don’t need to do anything. N3 Gateway access to BNF on MedicinesComplete will remain unaffected. Simply bookmark the entry page at https://www.medicinescomplete.com.

Q:

I haven’t received my verification email. What should I do?

A:

Once you have registered, the website will send you an automatic confirmation email (the ‘from’ name will be ‘mc3@medicinescomplete.com’). If you don’t receive this within an hour, please check your spam filter. You will need to click the link in this email to complete the registration process, so if you can’t find the email, unfortunately you will have to re-register as we are not able to re-send the auto-generated emails.

Q:

I work with the NHS, but am unsure how to register.

A:

Please follow the steps below:

  • Go to https://www.medicinescomplete.com
  • Click the ‘Subscribe’ tab in the page header
  • Click on ‘Choose Publications’ under ‘NHS or Non-Commercial’
  • Click on the resources that you wish to subscribe to – in this case, BNF (and BNFC if wanted)
  • Tick the box at the bottom of the page:
  • ‘I am a UK-based individual undertaking work (or training) for or on behalf of the NHS’
  • Read the MedicinesComplete terms and conditions, and accept them by ticking the box next to the sentence ‘I agree to the following statements’
  • Then ‘Proceed’
  • At this stage, step 2 of 4, ‘Sign In or Register’ choose ‘register now’ and complete your details. Alternatively, if you already have a single-user MedicinesComplete account please ‘Sign in’ with those details
  • Then ‘Proceed’
  • The next page asks you to ‘Confirm Details’. If it shows your correct email and the subscriptions BNF (and BNFC) at zero value, then ‘Proceed’
  • The system will send a confirmation email to your inbox. It’s essential that you click the link in the email and create your account – otherwise you won’t be able to access your subscription.

Q:

I teach at a Medical or Pharmacy school. Will my students still be eligible for free access?

A:

Yes, your students can sign up using the NHS option or through OpenAthens.

Q:

Why are you changing access? Will I still be able to get free access?

A:

We are changing the way you access BNF, not the terms of access. Access is still free if you are a UK-based individual undertaking work (or training) for or on behalf of the NHS or an NHS organisation; if you are a non-commercial user. You could also check with the NHS site here to see if you are eligible for access through OpenAthens.

If you are not eligible for an OpenAthens account, your employer may need to purchase an Organisational Subscription to continue your access. Please contact us for further information or email us at sales@medicinescomplete.com.

Q:

How do I access BNF content on MedicinesComplete using my OpenAthens ID? Do I need to re-register?

A:

No, you don’t need to re-register. If you already have an OpenAthens ID, or if you apply for and are given a new ID, follow the steps below for access.

  • Go to https://www.medicinescomplete.com
  • Click on ‘Sign in via OpenAthens’ – the link below the sign in box
  • On the next page, sign in to the Authentication Point with your OpenAthens username and password
  • Click on ‘Login’ and you will be directed to the search page within MedicinesComplete with access to BNF and BNFC.

Q:

I use the BNF App. Do I need to do anything?

A:

No, the BNF App is provided by NICE using BNF data. You will continue to login using your OpenAthens ID.

Q:

I use NICE Evidence Services. Do I need to do anything?

A:

No, the BNF on NICE Evidence Services is provided by NICE using BNF data – this service remains unaffected by the changes.
